Most of the refugees are mothers and their children. On average they had one hour to pack the basics and completely abandon life.
The first few weeks were simply about making it through the day. There was no possibility to think about "next month", except perhaps as a romantic fantasy to escape an overwhelming present. In the face of boundless loss, stood the unconditional support offered by so many strangers. Stripped to frightening bareness, we discovered the true face of humans: kindness.
